Shield Ranch Barton Creek is a 6,400 acre ranch on the eastern edge of the Texas Hill Country, 18 miles west of downtown Austin. It is a nationally designated historic district and protected wildland with 6.5 miles of Barton Creek, held under two conservation easements by The Nature Conservancy and the City of Austin. The Shield family bought it in 1938. DarkSky International certified it in 2024 as an Urban Night Sky Place, the first in Texas, and its place page lists 25.9 square kilometers. Nearby Dark Sky Places include Dripping Springs, Bee Cave and Travis County's Milton Reimers Ranch Park. Our light pollution map estimates Bortle 8 at our coordinates, which fits a site this close to Austin.
The ranch runs a permanent sky quality meter that takes a reading every 15 minutes for the Hays County Friends of the Night Sky network. A night sky survey was also done in summer 2023. Neither DarkSky nor the ranch publishes the values on the pages we found. Lighting on the ranch follows DarkSky's five principles for responsible outdoor lighting.
This is private land. Access is for registered visitors on public and private group programs and Camp El Ranchito, and stargazing is one of those programs. The first public Dusk to Dark Star Party ran in November 2022. If you get in, the core peaks around 31 degrees above the southern horizon, and our data gives June the most core hours, then May and July.
